To get an estimate of how performance differs on well-formed versus learner writing, we carried out the following experiment. All of the CLC sentences that contained article and preposition errors were extracted and used to create two test sets: a “corrected set” where, with the exception of the targeted error, all of the other errors flagged in the sentence were corrected, and the “original set” where none of the other errors were corrected. Errors that were marked as being spelling errors, however, were corrected, so the uncorrected sentences were partially cleaned up.
