This benchmark rewards those systems that can be serviced while online, without causing a system outage. The Service Complexity Benchmark version A, SCB-A, is used to evaluate the complexity of servicing components of computer systems. The SCB-A benchmark rewards systems in which the less-reliable components are easily replaced without requiring the removal of other components or fasteners, or disconnecting cables. The SCB-A benchmark does not penalize systems in which some highly reliable components may be more difficult to service.
Most commercial computing systems are somewhere between these extremes. Using the hypothetical example above, we might consider the effect of mirroring disks, dynamic reconfiguration (DR), and the self-healing feature CPU offlining. DR allows components to be attached or detached from a running system without causing fully disruptive outages. CPU offlining allows a processor to be dynamically removed from service without causing any disruption. 2 shows such an analysis. Note that this is a simplified view of system components.
