So konnte in einer amerikanischen Studie gezeigt werden, dass von 185 Patienten, die ein ernstes unerwünschtes Ereignis erlitten, das zu einem längeren Krankenhausaufenthalt führte, nur in 13 Fällen Haftungsansprüche geltend gemacht wurden (Andrews 1997).
