And the passion endures. (VII, p. 25) Similar problems arise with Hugh Selwyn Mauberley, the poem written in the 'gap' between the Cantos of 1919 and 1922. Although Pound tried here to exorcise the aestheticism which plagued the opening of his long poem, the terms of his criticism still moved within the discourse he was striving to reject. If Mauberley is not wholly satisfactory it is because the epigrammatic 'hardness' of the writing, its wit and precision of rhyme, are inadequate means with which to expose the contradictions of its main theme.
II ECONOMICS IN THE FIRST THIRTY CANTOS Pound's commitment to 'energy' certainly helps to explain his handling of Douglas's themes in Cantos VII-XXX . In this sequence the market-place stands as a kind of synecdoche for the contemporary world, and Pound brings forward numerous instances of profit-making and entrepreneurial activity. In Canto XII, for example, we find the tale of Frank ('Baldy') Bacon who 'bought all the little copper pennies in Cuba'. Pound's attitude towards such activities is, however, somewhat problematic.
P In a private letter to Gold, Pound tried once more to clarify his position. Italy, he said, had already seen a workers' take-over of factories, and, although the Left had been too 'dumb' to determine the economic policy necessary to carry it through effectively, this crisis in the system had profoundly modified Italian society ('That capitalism has bust').
