The lucky, or unlucky, drone (depending upon your view of such things) who is successful on his mating flight dies in the act of copulation; his genitals are torn out by the queen as she leaves him. The drones that never accomplish their purpose in life almost always die soon also. Unable to care for themselves, they starve because the worker bees kick them out of the hive when food stores are depleted. Unhappily too for the drones, beekeepers have devised a way to inseminate the queen artificially, making drones even more of a surplus than nature intended.
There are also certain characteristics that persons allergic to insects seem to share. In a study of patients allergic to insects who suffered generalized systemic reactions about half of them also suffered from hay fever, asthma, or other Page 22 allergies, and there was a history of allergy in their families. Of those under age twenty the majority were males. After age twenty the proportions of female subjects rose.
