There's just one catch. Because it is designed to operate with all computers, ASCII has a simple, basic structure that lacks all of the stylistic embellishments typically included in the format of a resume. In other words, an Internet resume has no bold lettering, no bullets, no italics, no tabs, no pictures or graphics and no special characters or symbols. It's simply plain, unadorned, generic text. " It is always aligned with the left margin and will only accept the letters, numbers and symbols you find on the keyboard of your computer.

It thinks you are an ''enjunioneer," and you can count on it to Page 16 identify your resume for any job calling for that credential. Unfortunately, you can also be sure that it will never identify you for a job as an engineer. To appreciate just how much a scanner's inability to read your resume can hurt you, take a look at the resume on pages 15 and 16. The individual it describes might be a very accomplished professional, but the scanned resume completely obliterates that fact. As a consequence, the computer cannot identify him/her as a candidate for an employment opportunity even though this person might be fully qualified for that opening.
