First, it is likely that the communicative sentence types themselves derive from general, ancient attitude types and that they still carry some inherent attitude.

Since the attitudinal functions of intonation are closer to the unintentional signalling of physiological states (Bolinger 1989: 194–214), it seems reasonable to assume that they are older than the grammatical functions.
