He emphasized the ways in which the proposed research conformed to the criteria under which human subjects research can be deemed ethical. Moreover, I argue, establishing the scientific and ethical integrity of the protocol was central to its progress; even if the central aim of bioethics and the bureaucracy in which it is embodied and embedded is to protect the integrity of human subjects, it also acts as a tool for maintaining the integrity of science and the State.
But the term ‘research subject’ must be used in this instance to think about the subjectivities – the lived experiences, personalities, and emotions – of potential transplant recipients. The subjectivities of the patients, along with their biology, must exhibit certain qualities, must exist in a certain balance between normal and pathological: it is in this balance that they become operable and ethical because they conform to the very guidelines and arguments that (re)produce them in light of current technological possibilities and limitations.
