This type of career path, I should note, was a far cry from what I had envisioned for myself — I did not see myself as a corporate attorney. The only interest that I had in law at the time was how it could be used as an instrument for social policy and societal change. Such a perspective, especially during the Vietnam War era, did not bode well for my relationship with my father and my employer. In short, I felt trapped and believed I needed to resolve the situation quickly if I was going to survive the summer.

He carried the awareness of both potentialities, and this awareness deepened his humanity and created in him a deep and abiding faith.
