With the emphasis in the steel industry on going to continuously cast materials, a number of the steels available today may disappear. Large carbides, particularly those near the sheet surface, have a detrimental effect on the enameling characteristics of steel sheet intended for porcelain enameling applications. Thus, on the basis of the results of previous laboratory studies, which showed that carbides started to grow when the box annealing temperature exceeded about 1275"F, a hot spot temperature of 1250°F and a cold spot temperature of 1200°F was selected for VITRENAMEL 2 DQSK steel.

Although pickle-free systems offered substantial cost savings (energy and chemical usage, reduction in operations and labor), an increase in productivity, and the elimination of sophisticated wastewater treatment facilities, they did not initially provide all of the physical and chemical properties of conventional ground coats. In an effort to obtain adequate adherence, other properties suffered. Problems including rheology (frit solubility), shorter working ranges, and poorer thermal properties combined to create what was largely an unforgiving coating system in comparison to conventional ground coats.
