MRP is often discussed by analogy with fidelity within a family or between married spouses. One recognizes that other relationships are as precious as one’s own, but this perception of equality does not mean that one presumes the same intimacy with other’s kin as with one’s own. However, as this example illustrates, what counts as intimacy may differ from one religious family to another. When I go with my students to visit various religious sites (a Hindu temple, a mosque, a Buddhist monastery), the majority are enthusiastic, quite open to participation in other settings and rituals, and very slow to criticize the host tradition.

To focus in this way on intention gives our discussion of MRP a heavily individualistic bias. It reinforces a view of MRP that sees it almost entirely as the product of personal choice, and that sees the purpose and benefits of religion through the lens of the individual alone. Group boundaries, authoritative rules, and communal solidarity are precisely what MRP may be seen to break down or On Doing What Others Do 25 problematize, perhaps as largely arbitrary constructs. But the reality of MRP, even at the individual level, cannot be appreciated without attention to these dimensions as well.

The intention to realize emptiness as the true nature of all apparent being is harder still to carry out, and is in direct conflict with some other religious aims (like that of the Advaitan). The intention to attain enlightenment for the sake of all sentient beings is one that may be impossible to form without a strong prior knowledge of the Buddhist elements of wisdom and compassion it combines, and it distinguishes some Buddhists from others. In the case of my own very modest Buddhist practice, experience followed thought, in that it was the development of my theology of religious pluralism that impelled me forward.
