In cases of weak suppletion, it suffices with uniqueness alone for an alternation to be considered suppletive.
C). In this study a distinction is proposed between categorial and non-categorial suppletion in order to make this distinction, cf. 4 for definition and examples. 2 Treatments and explanations for suppletion The phenomenon of suppletion has evoked different reactions among linguists. There is a strong tendency to regard it as something completely arbitrary and thus uninteresting; this is matched by an equally strong tendency to consider suppletion “marginal” and “accidental”, and generally as non-functional historical residue.
When suppletion is referred to as “marginal”, as is commonly done, there are two ways in which this could be the case: (i) it is marginal cross-linguistically, that is, it occurs in a very small number of languages around the world (cf. Dressler, Mel’čuk); (ii) it is marginal because there are typically very few suppletive items in the languages in which it occurs. However, as is also widely acknowledged, suppletion affects high token frequency items, which are far from marginal since they are the ones most commonly used in texts and conversation of their respective languages.
