The spark ignites the compressed and heated mixture of fuel and air in the combustion chamber to cause rapid burning. The burning fuel produces intense heat that causes rapid expansion of the gases compressed within the cylinder. This pressure forces the piston downward. The downward stroke turns the crankshaft with great force. Figure 3–5 illustrates the power stroke. Notice that both valves remain closed during the power stroke. Because the valves are closed and the piston is sealed tightly within the cylinder, the expansion of gases drives the piston downward.

At this point, the pressure of the atmosphere is many times greater than that of the low-pressure area created at the top of the cylinder. So, atmospheric pressure pushes fuel and air through the open valve and port into Figure 3–2 The operating cycle of the engine includes four strokes, or movements, of a piston: intake, compression, power, and exhaust. Figure 3–4 The compression stroke. the cylinder. In the process, atomization takes place—the fuel injector delivers a finely atomized spray of gasoline droplets to the incoming air. This mixture of atomized gasoline and air enters and fills the cylinder. The intake valve is opened to permit the passage of atomized gasoline and air into the cylinder. As the air/fuel mixture rushes into the cylinder, it swirls around the open intake valve. This action, along with the heat of the engine, helps to mix and vaporize the fuel more thoroughly with the air.
