The thesis that the minimalist program puts forth is that human language is a computational system that connects the sensori-motor system and the conceptual system in an optimal way. Therefore, the various properties of the language faculty ought to be either imposed by the two "performance" systems linked through language, or else a result of optimality principles governing language itself. The minimalist program is an attempt to explain all the core properties of the language faculty just in terms of these two types of factors.
Maybe the people who do it are interested in different questions, but there the connections are obvious. Other points of contact have to do with work in semantics. For some reason philosophers regard semantics as part of philosophy. Maybe rightly, maybe wrongly, but insofar as they do, they are dealing with questions which linguists also deal with. 4 One can say it is a point of convergence and people will be interested in each other's results. And then there is another connection in which philosophy is concerned with the methodological problems of the sciences.
In fact there was one result18 which had linguistic interest, namely the fact that you can think of a context-free grammar as a certain kind of automaton that takes symbols from left to right and prints out tree structures for them. You can make this precise but intuitively that is what it is. A context-free grammar has interesting automata-theoretic properties, in fact; it has the properties of a pushdown storage automaton. And what is the significance of that for linguistics? Well, it means that to the extent that context-free grammars represent properties of languages pushdown storage automata can yield reasonable processors for language.
