We then move into the cases in point. The first case in Chapter 3 reconstructs a particular episode germane to recent high-profile debates on the question of “who controls the Internet” (Goldsmith and Wu 2006). In 1998 the US Department Digital Dilemmas 29 of Justice took Microsoft to court, charging it with anticompetitive practices.

We [tend to] read what major news outlets make of the internet phenomenon—not what is actually ­discussed in forums, exchanged on peer to peer networks, or how people use search engines. (Lovink 2012: 3). Lovink’s immanent critique of both web-shy “old social movement” sympathizers and web-savvy would-be political activists targets the ongoing distaste and high moral ground taken by critical theory and research towards the internet as object of study and means to an end. As Geert Lovink points out: It is no longer sufficient to complain about network society’s dysfunction­ alities in terms of usability, access, privacy, or copyright infringements. Instead, we need to investigate that slippery nexus between the internet’s reinforcement of existing power structures, and parallel—and increasingly ­interpenetrating—worlds where control is diffused.
