The plenary papers current the state of the art and an summary within the parts of airplane and nuclear energy stations, simply because those safety-critical procedure domain names own the main hugely built fault administration and supervision schemes. extra plenary papers coated the hot advancements in analytical redundancy. In overall there are ninety five papers provided in those court cases.

Therefore, in the last years, the process industry insists in the requirement that the control Industrial processes must, for reasons of economic losses system as an overall system effectively never fails [Lauber from even short term failures or for reasons of safety, be 1989/2]. available to carry out their assigned functions for long periods of time [Williams & Mowle 1988, Williams & Kompass 1990]. A requirement for total systems availability is not easy to achieve. As shown in Fig. 1, there are 6 main types of failures and errors which endanger the availability of a technical process [Lauber 1989/ 1]: system component failures caused by physical or chemical faults system component failures energy supply failures, caused for example by power supply faults control system failures environmental disturbances and external interference human operator errors maintenance errors and failures caused by wrong repair actions control system failures.
How eve r , developing internal process faults are only detected at a rather late stage and the avai l ab l e information does not a l low a n in-depth f a u l t dia gnos i s . This i s one o f the reasons that process operators are s t i l l required for the supervision of important proce sse s . These human operators use their own sensors , datarecords , own reasoning and long term experience to obtain the required infor mation on process changes and its diagnos i s . I f the basic tasks of process automation , the feed forward and feedback control are dedicated to a f i rst automation level , the various tasks with supervisory functions can be considered as forming a second level .
